Softball Drops a Pair at Maryville

ST. LOUIS - The Davenport University softball team was in the Midwest on Saturday for a doubleheader at Maryville, but dropped both games of the twinbill with scores of 5-3 and 3-1.

Davenport is now 7-8 on the season while Maryville moved two games above the .500 mark at 10-8. Next up for the Panthers, they'll be at McKendree on Sunday for a doubleheader with the first pitch in game one set for 1 p.m. eastern time.

In game one, Davenport fell behind 5-0 before scoring all three of its runs in the top of the seventh. That frame, Kennedy Crawford scored Briana Allen and Alexis Koza with a triple to right center before Crawford came in when Gabby Palazzolo reached first on an error by the left fielder. Palazzolo then moved all the way to third base and Selene Pauley represented the tying run at the plate, but Pauley struck out swinging.

Ellie Muilenburg (3-4) gave up five runs, four earned, on eight hits with only one walk and eight strikeouts on 110 pitches against 27 batters.

In the nightcap, the Panthers struck first when Alexa Flores doubled to left center and Pauley scored all the way from first base. That would be all the scoring for Davenport, though, as Maryville answered with two runs in the first and another in the fourth to win it, 3-1.

Taylor Simon (2-3) turned in a solid outing with three earned runs surrendered on six hits to go with only one free pass and five punchouts. Simon threw 89 pitches and faced 24 batters in her six innings of work.
