PUEBLO, Colo. - The Davenport men's lacrosse team was looking to make it two straight wins and nearly got it on Sunday. The team was playing for the third time in the last four days in Colorado and in the end might have run out of gas against the Thunderwolves. CSU-Pueblo got the 17-16 win over the Panthers for their first win of the season (1-2). Meanwhile, Davenport slipped to 1-5 overall but have shown signs of turning the corner for the rest of the season.
In the first quarter, the Thunderwolves turned it up a notch and led 7-3. Tommy Vassallo scored three goals in the first quarter and Vassallo's third goal and Connor Owen's second goal both came in the final 23 seconds of the quarter. CSU-Pueblo led 4-0 in the first five minutes before
Blake Gibson-McDonald scored at 6:48. He also scored three minutes later and
Jordan Caskenette scored a man-up goal at 59 seconds left in the quarter.
The second quarter saw four of the five goals coming from CSU-Pueblo as they led 11-4 at halftime. Devin Thrower scored twice in the second quarter for CSU-Pueblo. The Panthers began to climb back into the game in the third quarter by scoring the first five goals to cut the deficit to 11-9.
Keelan McKouen scored three times in the quarter and DU trailed 12-10 with 15 minutes remaining.
The Panthers tied the game at 14 each with 8:35 to play and McKouen scored his sixth and final goal of the game. Vassallo put the Thunderwolves ahead at the 7:19 mark.
Austin Thompson scored a man-up goal at 4:56 from Caskenette. Logan Naves and Trevor Thompson then scored back-to-back goals with the latter coming with 2:24 to go and CSU-Pueblo building a 17-15 lead.
Adam Smellie cut it to one with 1:06 remaining and
Connor Foster won the ensuing faceoff on a violation by Jacob Muir. The Panthers got a 30-second extra-man chance and called timeout with 1:03 on the clock. Smellie tried to tie it at 17 but Garrett Breeling made the save and the clear attempt killed the rest of the clock.
CSU-Pueblo had 53 shots total including a high of 17 in the first quarter. Davenport took 49 shots with a best of 16 in the third quarter. The Thunderwolves led 37-31 in ground balls.
Jake Hodges and Foster each had five for the Panthers.
Daniel Milano made 18 saves for DU in net.
