Red-Hot Offense Leads Davenport to First Win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport's offense came to play for Saturday's matinee as the Panthers racked up 89 points and a 54.7 field goal percentage for their first win of the season, an 89-75 victory over Purdue Northwest. Davenport out-rebounded Purdue Northwest 39-28, including 31-19 on the defensive glass, and held the Pride's leading scorer, Jyrus Freels, to just seven points and four rebounds after a double-double of 20 points and 13 boards on Friday night. Davenport improves to 1-5 and will travel to Grand Valley State on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. tip-off in Allendale.

Chris Rollins led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go with four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Next up in the scoring column for Davenport was Elijah Belle with 18 points in 38 minutes, both of which are career highs for the sophomore. Joining those two with at least 10 points were Evan Hines and Chaz Birchfield, each with 12 to their name. Scott Ulaneo scored eight points and paced the Panthers in three other categories including rebounds (game-high 9), assists (3 - tied the game high) and steals (game-high 4). Freshman, James Felton, turned in 14 valuable minutes off the bench with eight points, five rebounds and three blocks, all of which are personal bests. Also scoring off the bench were Brackton Miller (5) and Jeff Carrier (3).

The first six minutes and change saw a seesaw affair that featured two ties and a pair of lead changes. The second of those two lead exchanges came at the 13:41 mark when a Miller three-pointer gave Davenport a 12-11 lead and the Panthers never looked back. The home team led by as many as 12 in the first half, 33-21 and 37-25, before a halftime lead of 10, 43-33. Out of the halftime break, Purdue Northwest could never get closer than nine, 55-46, and Davenport's advantage grew to as big as 21, 72-51, before the final 14-point margin of victory.

Next up, Davenport will face archrival, Grand Valley State, on Tuesday in Allendale with the tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. The Lakers entered their game against Parkside on Saturday night with a record of 4-1, including a 3-0 mark at home.
