GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In a rematch of last season's finale 311 days ago in the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals, the Davenport University men's basketball team faced Northwood to kick off the 2020-21 season. The Timberwolves held the Panthers to just 51 points, their fewest against a league opponent since joining the conference in 2017, and 28.6 percent (14-of-49) shooting from the field, their lowest mark since Feb. 18, 2015. Davenport will try to bounce back from the 75-51 defeat with a rematch against Northwood on Saturday on 1 p.m.
Making his Davenport debut,
Scott Ulaneo led the Panthers in both scoring (15 points) and rebounds (seven rebounds) while tying with
Chris Rollins for the team lead in assists with two. Rollins also set a new career high with seven steals, which is tied for fourth in program history. Three freshmen also made their program debuts including
Jeff Carrier (seven points, two rebounds, one block),
Brackton Miller and
James Felton.
Davenport opened the night on an 8-2 run before Northwood responded with a 15-4 spurt of its own to go ahead by five, 17-12. An Ulaneo layup cut the deficit to three, 17-14, before the Timberwolves pushed their lead to as big as 15, 37-22. Heading into the locker rooms for halftime, the visitors boasted a 12-point advantage, 40-28. In the second half, Davenport was able to pull within nine three times including 44-35, 46-37 and 49-40, but never closer. Northwood led by as many as 24 and that was when the final horn sounded.
