Balanced Scoring Leads to 3-0 Win over Northwood

Gustav Moeller, Daire O'Riordan and George Deveau paced the offense

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team has begun the GLIAC at 5-0 for the second time in three years after a 3-0 win over Northwood on Friday night. The Panthers were able to find balanced scoring despite being without two of their top scorers in Justice Sikkema and Matt Whelan. Gustav Moeller, Daire O'Riordan, and George Deveau each scored a goal for the Panthers and Shane Marinkovich made four saves in net. Marinkovich improved to 5-0 also in net for Davenport.

Northwood slipped to 1-7-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the GLIAC and DU won for the sixth time in the all-time series in 10 tries against the Timberwolves. The Panthers began the scoring in the 21st minute as Moeller scored his third goal of the season with an assist from Tyler Welch. For Welch, it was his first point of the season and he passed through a ball to Moeller who carried it down the middle and fired from around 17 yards for the 1-0 lead.

Just over four minutes later the senior captain O'Riordan took a direct kick from around 26 yards and drilled a shot to the top left corner for his fourth goal of the season and a 2-0 advantage. The final goal came in the 55th minute and occurred off a corner kick. Evan Marquess took the corner and O'Riordan headed the ball off the left post. The rebound came to Deveau who buried the opportunity for his first goal of the season for the 3-0 lead.

Davenport remains one game up on Parkside for first place in the GLIAC. DU registered 15 shots including eight on goal. Northwood finished with 12 shots including six shots on goal. The Panthers are now 5-3 overall and will play on Sunday again at home against Saginaw Valley State (6-3, 3-2 GLIAC) with a 2 p.m. kickoff.
