Diekevers Nets the Hat Trick, Davenport Defeats Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. - Highlighted by Haley Diekevers' fourth, fifth and sixth goals of the season and Gabriana Bennecke's gutsy effort in goal, the Davenport women's soccer team picked up its first road win of the season on Sunday at Northwood, 3-1.

The Panthers (2-9-1, 2-5-1 GLIAC) improved to 6-1 in the all-time series against the Timberwolves (7-3, 3-3 GLIAC), avenged the 2-1 loss in Midland back on April 3 and became the first team to score three goals against Northwood this season. Next up on the schedule, Davenport will host Michigan Tech on Sunday, Oct. 17 with the opening kickoff set for 11 a.m. The Panthers dropped their first meeting with the Huskies this season, 2-0, on Sept. 17 in Houghton.

Diekevers got the party started in the 10th minute when Filippa Struxsjoe passed it up from the 25-yard line to Diekevers who was right in front of the goal and put it in from about 12 yards out to the back left corner.

Then, under five minutes later, Raegan Radaz headed it to Gabby Scholten who dished it to Diekevers from the 15-yard line. Haley then settled the ball and scored it in with her left foot from about nine yards out. Those assists for Struxsjoe and Scholten were their first as Panthers while Radaz made it two on the season.

In the 31st minute, Northwood cut the deficit in half with its first (and only) goal of the match, but Davenport wasn't done. Just over 17 minutes later, Kylee Winn was throwing the ball in from the left sideline and about 15 yards out. Winn heaved the ball in and Diekevers deflected it in to earn the first hat trick by a Davenport player in the Division II era (last by a Panther was over five years ago).

For Diekevers, those three scores give the freshman six, the most by a Panther since Madeleine Zayan racked up seven as a true freshman in 2017. For Winn, that was the third assist of her career and first of the season.

In goal, Bennecke was brilliant in her first game back from injury. The sophomore stopper made a career high eight saves, two of which came on penalty kick attempts for Northwood (leading 3-1 both times), on 32 shots faced, also a personal most for Bennecke.
