CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport football team could not put together consecutive wins on Saturday with a 16-3 loss to Wayne State. The Panthers scored the first three points of the game but that was it for an offense that is still trying to find a true identity.
Bryan Plegue converted on a 26-yard field goal with 4:53 left in the first quarter on their second drive of the game. DU covered 59 yards in 11 plays and Plegue booted his fifth field goal of the season.
The Warriors then would go on to score the final 16 points of the contest en route to the victory. Kamri Mackey plunged over the goal line for a one-yard touchdown run with 6:32 left in the second quarter for a 7-3 lead. His 29-yard run set up calling his own number. Plegue got another crack at a field goal on the final play of the half but missed wide right into the wind from 37 yards.
Griffin Milovanski added to the lead with a 21-yard field goal with 31 seconds left in the third quarter. Myren Harris started off the fourth quarter with a 26-yard touchdown run around right end and won a foot race into the end zone with 12:41 to play. The extra point was blocked by
Kolade Amusan for the 16-3 score. Davenport had one more promising drive starting with 7:34 to go.
Jake Jensen made his first appearance at quarterback in his career on the previous drive but this time led the team down the field. He had a 15-yard run on 4th-and-2 on their own 31 and later completed a 16-yard pass to
Roy Livingstone into Wayne State territory. On fourth-and-goal from the four-yard line,
Amonte Phillips took a handoff and the wideout ran to the right sideline. He then passed the ball into the end zone for an apparent touchdown. The officials however ruled an illegal forward pass saying Phillips went past the line of scrimmage.Â
Blake Daniels completed six passes for 50 yards and ran for 38 more yards.
Seth Acda led the team with 57 rushing yards and
Jaier Harden added 54 rushing yards. Phillips caught three passes for 25 yards.
Kaleb Elam led the defense with 13 tackles including six solos.
Jalen Robinson had nine tackles including two tackles for loss and a pass breakup.
