CALEDONIA, Mich. - In a perfect world all Senior Day games would end in a victory. Unfortunately that was not the case on Sunday as the men's soccer team was defeated 3-0 by Parkside who crept a little closer to the Panthers for first place in the GLIAC standings. DU is now 8-3 in the league and the Rangers are 7-3-1 with three games left in the regular season. All three of those will be on the road for Davenport while Parkside will play two of their last three at home.
Evan Marquess and
Daire O'Riordan were honored during the pre-game for their contributions to the program and they have left a footprint on the program to be sure. Parkside scored at 13:46 as Max Ludwig notched his sixth of the season with an assist from Nikola Kesich. Ludwig took his shot from about 12 yards out to the lower left. The momentum swung just 12 seconds later when the Rangers scored again. Matteo Quintero was the beneficiary of two great passes. Kesich threaded one past two DU defenders and Rade Novakovich delivered a quick one-touch pass to Quintero who scored on a open net from about eight yards lower left for his third goal of the season.
The Panthers did apply pressure most of the game and finished with 17 total shots. Five of those shots were on target and saved by Alex Durand of Parkside. Parkside finished with 10 total shots including five on goal.
The final goal was scored in the 68th minute by Novakovich. Durand boomed a ball downfield and it bounced and was collected by Novakovich. He got past a defender and fired from the left wing with his left foot into the right lower corner from around 15 yards for his 15th goal of the season.
Davenport will begin their final push towards a championship on Friday, Oct. 29 at Saginaw Valley State for a 2:00 PM kickoff.
