UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Under abysmal field conditions at Braddock Field on Friday, the Davenport men's soccer team played to their first tie of the season, 1-1, against Saginaw Valley State. The rain over the last few days left the grass pitch in a muddy mess. Neither team could really get a solid footing all match.
Despite the conditions, the Panthers played a solid first half and led 1-0 at halftime.
George Deveau scored his second goal of the season in the 37th minute off a set piece.
Eoin Broughan took the free kick from the left side from about 25 yards and curled it towards the right post. Deveau came charging forward and got a foot on it for the goal.
In the second half, Davenport played more on their heels as the Cardinals controlled the ball more and had better scoring chances. The shots in the second half were 13-2 but a bad break evened the match at 1-1 in the 77th minute. The Cardinals were inside the 18-yard box and a pass went from right to left. Brady Walker was alone on the back side of the play and kicked a ball that deflected off Deveau for an own goal.
Heading into overtime, DU and SVSU each had one shot in the first 10 minutes. The Panthers took a corner kick in the final seconds but could not score the winner. In the second overtime, the Cardinals had a decent chance to win in the final 60 seconds. They had a shot on goal by Alex Gloshen saved by DU's
Shane Marinkovich. Two more shots were taken after the ball became loose and fortunately for the Panthers they were blocked off the foot of Gabriello Calamita.
SVSU finished with five shots on goal compared to three for the Panthers. The Cardinals also had 11 corner kicks to just one for DU. At the time of this recap, Parkside held a three-goal lead over Upper Iowa in Kenosha, Wis. If that result holds, DU and Parkside would be in a tie for first place in the GLIAC standings at 8-3-1. The Panthers will travel to Northwood (3-8-1 GLIAC) on Sunday, Oct. 31 for a 3:30 p.m. start against the Timberwolves.
