HAMMOND, Ind. - The Davenport University women's soccer team scored three goals in the first half for the first time as a member of the GLIAC (last time was in 2016) and added a fourth score in the second half to roll past Purdue Northwest, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at Pepsi Field. Next up, the Panthers will host No. 10 Ferris State on Friday, Nov. 5 for Senior Day with the opening kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m. at The Farm.
The Panthers were able to net four goals in a single match for the first time since 2017, a season in which they did it four times, including twice against the Pride. Davenport now leads the all-time series with Purdue Northwest, 8-1, and holds a steep advantage in goals, 33-3. The win improved the Panthers to 3-12-1 overall and 3-8-1 in GLIAC play while the Pride fell to 1-13-1 on the season and 0-11 in league action.
Davenport's leading scorer,
Haley Diekevers, got the party started in the seventh minute with her seventh goal of the season before Purdue Northwest made it 2-0 in favor of the Panthers under four minutes later with an own goal off of a corner kick. The scoring continued for the Panthers as
Filippa Struxsjoe found the back of the net in both the 23rd and 56th minutes for her second and third scores as a Panther. Diekevers aided Struxsjoe's second goal with her first career assist.
As a team, the Panthers' 17 shots are tied for the most in a road game this season and the 10 shots on goal are the second most, home or away. Friday, those 17 shots came from five different players including Struxsjoe (8 shots, 6 SOG), Diekevers (4 shots, 2 SOG),
Medina Hindic (3 shots, 1 SOG),
Kathryn Hoeger (1 SOG), and
Raegan Radaz (1 shot).
In goal,
Gabriana Bennecke pitched the second shutout of her career and first this season with two saves on four shots faced, the fewest she's faced this season. In Davenport's two matches against Purdue Northwest this season, the Pride have mustered just 12 total shots, only three of which were on target.
