GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team will be facing Saginaw Valley State for the third time this season when the two teams square off in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals. The match will take place in Racine, Wis. at Pritchard Park with a start time listed as 8:30 pm eastern time. The Panthers claimed a share of the 2021 GLIAC Championship with Parkside and are the second seed based on tiebreakers despite both having 10-3-1 records in league action. Davenport enters the tournament having won or tied six of their last seven matches.
Davenport battles third seed Saginaw Valley State in what should be a tough matchup. The Cardinals are a main reason why DU didn't have an outright championship after a win and tie during the regular season. SVSU won 2-1 in double overtime on Oct. 3 in Caledonia and the teams tied 1-1 in double overtime back on Oct. 29 in University Center.
Justice Sikkema scored for DU in the first meeting and
George Deveau scored for the Panthers in the second meeting. In the first meeting, DU was down a man beginning in the 40th minute and still managed to force the match in extra sessions.
Davenport and Saginaw Valley State have gone into double overtime each of the last three meetings and this will be the second time that the teams have played three times in a season (2019). That final 2019 match was in the GLIAC Tournament also hosted by Parkside with the Cardinals prevailing 3-2.
Matt Whelan scored the team's second goal in the 65th minute in that matchup.
