ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Davenport women's basketball team hit the road for the final time during the regular season on Tuesday. DU traveled to nearby Grand Valley State to face the ninth-ranked Lakers at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The story of this one was the defense by the Lakers in the 63-43 contest in favor of GVSU. Davenport was held to a season low in points and managed to shoot 30.2 percent from the floor. The Panthers had been shooting the ball well from behind the arc recently, but cooled off to 3-of-16 for the game.
The Lakers led wire-to-wire in this one including a 13-8 edge after the first quarter. Both teams shot 4-of-14 in the quarter but the Lakers made two three-pointers and were 3-of-4 at the foul line. After building a 10-2 lead, the Panthers began to chip away and trailed 12-8 at the 2:39 mark. DU got within two points twice in the second quarter at 14-12 and 16-14. Brooke McKinley then hit a three-pointer at the 7:05 mark and again at 5:19 to give GVSU a 22-14 advantage.
GVSU led 28-22 going into halftime and the Panthers were hanging around much like the first meeting this season in Grand Rapids.
Toni Grace had 10 points in the second quarter going 4-of-8 from the floor. She had 14 points in the first half going 6-of-12 from the floor with three rebounds. McKinley led the Lakers with 10 points in the first half and shot 3-of-6 from the floor, all on three-point attempts.
The Panthers were only able to score nine points in the third quarter as GVSU extended their lead to 46-31. In the fourth quarter it was much of the same with DU scoring 12 points on 3-of-12 shooting. The Lakers had eight different players score in the final quarter for a total of 17 points. GVSU shot 4-of-11 in the quarter and were 7-of-10 at the free throw line.
Grace finished with 18 points and four rebounds for the Panthers.
Loni Sales scored 11 points and grabbed a season-high nine rebounds. She also had three assists and played 37 minutes. McKinley finished with 22 points for the Lakers and was 7-of-12 from behind the arc. Samantha Gehrls led her team with eight assists and had just one turnover.Â
