MARQUETTE, Mich. - It was a tale of two halves on Sunday as the Davenport University men's basketball team led Northern Michigan by two at halftime, 27-25, before being outscored by 14 in the second half, 41-27. With the 66-54 defeat, the Panthers fell to 5-11 with two regular-season games remaining at Saginaw Valley State on Feb. 26-27.
Three Panthers scored in double-figures including
Chris Rollins with 14 points and three steals,
Elijah Belle with 14 points and
James Felton with 10 points to go with six rebounds and a block. As a team, Davenport tied its season low in assists with five and went just 2-for-17 from behind the arc. On the other side, Northern Michigan dished out 16 assists to 11 turnovers and shot nearly 54 percent from the field in the second half as opposed to only 35.7 percent in the first 20 minutes.
The Panthers started hot with the game's first seven points, nine of its first 12 and even pushed their lead to 10, 19-9, with just over 10 minutes to play until the break. The Wildcats then answered with a 16-4 run to take their first lead of the game, 25-23, at the 3:10 mark. Then Davenport's
Jarrin Randall and
Chaz Birchfield made back-to-back buckets to give their team the two-point advantage heading into the locker room. Out of the break, Davenport had the lead for nearly nine minutes prior to a pair of ties at 37-37 and 39-39 before Northern Michigan used runs of 11-5 and 14-5 to seal it.
