GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Playing for the first time in 495 days, the Davenport University women's soccer team played host to Michigan Tech in the 2020-21 season opener on Friday. The difference came when the Huskies found the back of the net in the 78th minute, which held up until the final buzzer sounded. Davenport will welcome Northern Michigan to The Farm on Sunday with kickoff set for 11 a.m.
Davenport had two penalty kick attempts, one apiece from
Madeleine Zayan and
Ashlyn Skidmore, but came up empty on both. Overall, the Panthers six shots came from Skidmore (3 shots, 1 SOG), Zayan (2 shots, 1 SOG) and
Natalia Casiello (1 shot).
In goal, the Panthers'
Samantha Beckles saved eight shots attempts, just one off her career high that she set as a freshman.
In the team head-to-head, Michigan Tech fired a total of 16 shots, nine of which were on goal, compared to six and two, respectively, for Davenport.
