ASHLAND, Ohio - The Davenport women's lacrosse team was holding on to a lead of just two goals, 9-7, at the halfway point on Friday at Ashland in the 2021 GLIAC opener. Thanks to some halftime adjustments, though, the Panthers exploded for 14 second-half goals to just three by the Eagles and won in convincing fashion, 23-10. Improving to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in league play, these two teams will face each other again on Sunday with the opening draw scheduled for high noon.
Seven different players broke into the scoring column for the Panthers including
Brenna Knoll (6 goals),
Aaliyah Miller (6),
Anna Glynn (5),
Monique Vale (3),
Maddy Haynes (1),
Ryann Deuel (1), and
Avery Garant (1).
Among them, Knoll stood above the rest as she also tallied eight draw controls (five away from 200 in career), two caused turnovers and a ground ball. Fifteen more draw controls and Knoll will move past
Kaitlyn Lowden for second place in the career record book.
Davenport's other team leaders included Miller with four assists, 10 points and nine shots on goal, Knoll with nine shots on goal, Glynn with 13 total shots, and Deuel with nine draw controls. Vale,
Jordyn Harrison,
Amber Park, and Miller each registered three ground balls.
In goal,
Tylor Baker (22:04) and
Grace DeRidder (37:56) split time again with three saves apiece while DeRidder picked up the win and improved to 3-0 on the season.
Overall, the Panthers fired 51 shots, a number that is just one off the school record of 52 set on April 11, 2014 against Siena Heights and is just the second instance with 50 or more in program history.
