DETROIT - Wayne State walked it off in game one, 5-4, with a two-run single down the left field line, but Davenport wasn't going to let that happen again in the rematch. Thanks to
Lindsay Goodman's go-ahead RBI in the sixth inning and a brilliant pitching performance from
Emma Miller (7.0 IP, 0 ER), the Panthers took game two, 2-1, to earn the split on Sunday.
In game one, Davenport scored first when
Mariah Cura hit a solo homerun to left field in the second, her first shot of the season and fourth of her career. Wayne State tied things up in the third before the Panthers responded with two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to go up three, 4-1. Those three runs came when
Alexis Koza doubled in
Rylie Kalina, later scored on a passed ball and
Rachel Griffin (pictured) hit a solo blast to left. That blast gave Griffin three on the season and 18 for her career.
The Warriors proceeded to score two in the fifth on a two-run single before the two-run base knock in the seventh to win it.
In six and a third innings pitched,
Ellie Muilenburg (4-4) gave up five runs, three earned, on 10 hits with 10 strikeouts and just one walk. Muilenburg has now struck out 10 or more batters in three of her eight outings this season.
In the nightcap, Wayne State was the first team to strike as it went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the third. Two innings later, Griffin got Davenport on the board with a double to right center that brought in
Jorden Urban all the way from first base. Then in the sixth, Goodman did her damage and gave the Panthers the lead for good.
Emma Miller (2-3) was dealing as she picked up her first complete game of the season and fourth of her career. In fact, Sunday's effort marked Miller's first in which she pitched at least seven innings and got the win.
