EVANSVILLE, Ind. - More than a week since its last game, the Davenport University softball team was back in action on Friday at the Midwest Region Crossover hosted by the University of Southern Indiana. The Panthers run ruled Kentucky Wesleyan in the opener, 12-3, in six innings before falling to Lake Erie, 9-3, in the nightcap. Next up on Saturday, DU will face Trevecca Nazarene (1 p.m. ET) and Kentucky Wesleyan (3 p.m. ET) for a second time.
In the first game of the day, Davenport (3-3) racked up those 12 runs on 10 hits and did so after falling behind 3-0 in the top of the second. The Panthers proceeded to score two runs in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth, and five more in the sixth to end it. Seven different players registered a hit in the DU lineup including two apiece from the 3-4-5 spots that were made up of
Rylie Kalina (2-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI),
Rachel Griffin (2-for-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB) and
Lindsay Goodman (2-for-3, 1 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB). Goodman,
Monica Meger and
Addison Binney each went deep for the first time in their careers.
In the circle,
Ellie Muilenburg (2-1) picked up the win with three earned runs given up on four hits to go with four strikeouts and not a single walk. In relief,
Emma Miller pitched two perfect innings without allowing a single hit or walk and struck out four as well.
In game two, Lake Erie brought across one run in the first, six in the second and two more in the fourth. Two of Davenport's three runs came on solo homeruns as Griffin went deep in the second and Kalina followed suit in the fourth. The Panthers' third run came in when Kalina singled in
Nikki Szost in the fifth.
Elise Magnus (0-1) lasted just two innings in the first start of her career with seven earned runs surrendered on six hits, no free passes and a punchout.
Taylor Simon threw the final four frames with two earned runs allowed on four hits, only one walk and four strikeouts.
