GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The men's lacrosse team was back in action after a hiatus and entertained 16th-ranked Maryville at the DU Turf Field on Saturday afternoon. The Saints never trailed in the contest winning 11-4 over the Panthers. Maryville improved to 7-3 both in the GLVC and overall while the Panthers are now 1-7 both in the conference and overall.
The Saints wasted no time in establishing a lead scoring 1:07 into the game as Tyler Wenck was assisted by Ben Foster. Maryville came back 1:02 later to build a 2-0 lead as Seth Cianfoni scored with an assist from Justin Morgan. Maryville kept the pressure on scoring at the 10:37 mark as Wenck found the back of the net again from Jake Foster. The Panthers weathered the storm for the rest of the quarter and themselves ended the first quarter scoring at the 1:06 mark as
Stephen Ochsenkehl scored on a quick transition goal from
Trent Eichbauer.
Maryville did all of the second quarter scoring to lead 6-1 at halftime. Jake Foster netted a pair of goals and Morgan tacked on another just 37 seconds until halftime. Foster increased the lead to 7-1 with the first goal of the third quarter on a man-up situation with an assist from Jacob Allen.
James Johnston potted DU's second goal of the game as Eichbauer recorded another assist at the 10:53 mark of the quarter. Foster scored two more goals to run his game total to five in the quarter as the Saints led 9-2 with 15 minutes to play.
Adam Smellie scored at 14:17 of the quarter from
Gavin Mead for DU's third goal. Morgan and Wenck scored for the Saints sandwiched between was a goal by
Jordan Caskenette at the 6:31 mark from Mead. DU held Maryville to 1-of-6 in extra-man opportunities.
Maryville finished with a 14-5 edge in faceoff wins and won the turnover battle 25-13. The final shots on goal tally was 32-6 in favor of Maryville.
Daniel Milano had another brilliant day at goaltender for the Panthers. He made 21 saves giving him back-to-back 20-plus save performances.Â
