Davenport and Ashland Split Sunday's Double Dip

CALEDONIA, Mich. - Hosting a sixth consecutive home doubleheader, the Davenport softball team dropped game one to Ashland on Sunday, 8-5, before walking it off in the nightcap, 6-5. Next up on the schedule, the Panthers are set to host Parkside for Senior Day on Saturday with the first pitch in game one scheduled for 1 p.m.

With the split, Davenport climbed back to the .500 mark overall at 16-16 and stayed four games above the water mark in GLIAC play at 12-8. On the other side of the diamond, Ashland is 8-16 on the season and 5-8 in league action.

Game one saw some sloppy play defensively as the two teams made a combined 12 errors including seven by the home team. Despite that, Davenport led Ashland 4-1 entering the top of the sixth inning before the Eagles put up a six spot in that frame to go ahead by three, 7-4. Each team notched another run in the seventh inning to make the final score 8-5.

Ellie Muilenburg (6-7) pitched 5.2 innings while giving up five runs, only two earned, on five hits to go with four walks and 10 strikeouts. In an inning and a third of relief, Emma Miller surrendered three runs, all of which were unearned, on just one hit with no free passes and three punchouts.

In the rematch, Davenport struck first with three runs in the third as Addison Binney scored on Gabby Palazzolo's fielder's choice before Rachel Griffin singled in both Alexis Koza and Palazzolo with a base knock down the left field line.

The next inning, Ashland put up a three spot of its own to tie it up, but the Panthers came right back with a run in the home half as Palazzolo doubled in Binney with a hit to right center. Two innings later, Rylie Kalina made it a 5-3 game with a solo shot to dead center, but the Eagles tied it up again with a two-run blast in the top of the seventh, which paved the way for Griffin's fireworks in the bottom of the eighth.

Taylor Simon got the no decision (4.0 IP) with three earned runs allowed on seven hits, one walk and one strikeout. Miller (8-6) picked up the victory with the final four innings pitched, two earned runs, six hits, no free passes, and two punchouts.
