GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport University men's soccer team is hoping to start anew with their upcoming trip to Northern Michigan in the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals. The Panthers have been riddled by injuries to key players and enter the tournament after a 3-4 record during the spring season. They played every GLIAC team once but are hoping to snap a three-game losing streak heading into the postseason. The instability has resulted in a scoring drought where the Panthers had just one goal in their final three matches.
DU is hoping to regain the form that saw them jump out of the gates with a 3-1 record. One of those wins came against Sunday's opponent in Northern Michigan back on March 14 in Caledonia. The Panthers claimed a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats and scored both goals in the first half.
Daire O'Riordan scored in the 10th minute on a penalty kick goal.
Matt Whelan later in the 40th minute scored the game-winning goal unassisted. Davenport outshot Northern Michigan 18-6 including 6-4 in shots on goal. Davenport has won the last three meetings in the series each time by a single goal. In seven all-time meetings, DU has allowed no more than two goals in a game and that has happened twice. Kickoff on Sunday, April 25 is set for 1 PM inside the Superior Dome in Marquette.
