MIDLAND, Mich. - The Timberwolves of Northwood University put themselves right into the thick of the GLIAC race this weekend by capturing three of four games against Davenport including Sunday's 13-6 win at Gerace Stadium. The Panthers won the series opener on Friday but then gave up double digits in each of the final three games of the series to lose a weekend series in the GLIAC for the first time this season.
It started off well in the top of the first as
Noah Marcoux hit his third homer of the series and eighth of the season, a two-run shot to right, which also plated
Nolan Bryant for a 2-0 lead. The Timberwolves came right back in the bottom half and tied it up as Rhett Evans had a two-run double down the left field line.
The Panthers took a 5-2 lead in the top of the second as
Kamrin Markwardt singled to right and a throwing error allowed
Christian Petre to score.
Hunter Ruhstorfer had a sacrifice fly to score the fourth run and
Nolan Anspaugh had a RBI double to left center for the fifth run. Northwood again answered in the bottom half with five runs to take a 7-5 lead.
Ricky Clark made his first start since March 6 and did not fare well allowing seven runs and seven hits in 1.2 innings to take the loss (1-1).
Northwood extended their lead with a run in the third and then opened up a cushion in the fifth. Michael Karam did something no one has done all season and that was homer off
Cal Djuraskovic. The two-time reigning GLIAC Pitcher of the Week finally looked vulnerable for the first time this season and gave up a three-run shot with one out as NU led 11-5.
The Timberwolves tacked on a run in the sixth and eighth to lead 13-5. Davenport scored one more run in the ninth as Marcoux doubled home Bryant. Marcoux went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Bryant went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Zach Haefer in relief off Djuraskovic went two innings and allowed one unearned run with four strikeouts.
