HAMMOND, Ind. - Purdue Northwest used a three-run fifth inning on Wednesday to down Davenport in game one, 4-3, and the second game was cancelled before first pitch because of an incoming storm. That second game will not be made up. Next up on the schedule for the Panthers, they'll be at Northwood on Friday with the first pitch in game one set for 3:30 p.m.
Lindsay Goodman (pictured) got the scoring started for Davenport with a two-run homer in the top of the first that also scored
Alexis Koza. Three innings later, Purdue Northwest got one run back plus three more in the fifth to go ahead by two, 4-2. The Panthers' third and final run came in the top of the sixth when
Rylie Kalina reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and
Rachel Griffin came around to score. DU then stranded a pair of runs in the seventh and the score stayed put.
In the circle,
Emma Miller (9-7) suffered just the second loss in her last eight outings as she gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched. Miller walked multiple batters for just the fourth time in 20 appearances this season. In relief,
Taylor Simon handled the final inning and a third without a single hit surrendered, no free passes and a punchout.
The Panthers' seven hits came from five different players including Goodman (2-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB), Koza (2-4, 1 R),
Gabby Palazzolo (1-4),
Mariah Cura (1-3), and Miller (1-2). Goodman went deep for the eighth time this season, which is good for second in the GLIAC. The sophomore shortstop has homered in two of her last three games.
