UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - A late foul on Davenport goalkeeper
Carter Selvius proved to be the difference in a 1-0 double overtime loss at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday. In the 104th minute, the Cardinals played a ball to the right edge of the 18-yard box and Selvius was a split-second late getting to the area where he collided with a Cardinal to draw the whistle and a penalty kick opportunity. Kairo Coore took the kick and buried it in the top right corner for a win that maintained SVSU's unblemished GLIAC record at 5-0. The loss severely hurts the Panthers chance at a share of the conference title with a 3-2 record with just two games remaining in the regular season.
The match was evenly played throughout as the final shots were 14-11 in favor of the Cardinals. However, the Panthers held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Each team was also whistled for 11 fouls.
Ryan Zietlow put three shots on target including a great chance to end the match in the first overtime. He fired a shot just outside the 18-yard box as Mason Maziasz came out of the goal just enough to get a piece of the ball. That was the last shot on goal for the Panthers in the contest. Selvius finished with three saves and Maziasz made five saves in the shutout. It was the first time that DU was shutout this season.
