UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - It was a great victory for the Davenport men's soccer team in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals with a comeback 3-2 win over second-seeded Parkside on Friday. The sixth-seeded Panthers have now put themselves on the brink of another GLIAC Tournament championship after winning the 2017 GLIAC Tournament in their first year in the conference. The Panthers will face fifth-seeded Ashland who defeated host and top-seeded Saginaw Valley State 1-0 in the first semifinal on Friday.
Cian Quinn put the Panthers up in the 14th minute with his second goal of the season.
Evan Marquess took a corner kick and
Daire O'Riordan headed it into the box where Quinn headed it inside the right post from a few yards out. The Panthers led 1-0 at halftime but the second half featured four goals and a lot of excitement.
The Rangers scored the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead. Nikola Kesich scored his first of the season in the 55th minute from Rade Novakovich. Novakovich then put his team ahead in the 63rd minute on a cross from the far side and a header to the back of the net.
Davenport did not let up and got the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 74th minute. Marquess took the kick and buried it to the left side of the net for his third goal of the season.
Justice Sikkema had a very special goal in the 78th minute for the winner. He took a pass from O'Riordan and made a series of one-on-one moves to get free and slip a shot low right from the left wing into the back of the net.
Davenport controlled the tempo and led 11-4 in shots on goal.
