CALEDONIA, Mich. - After falling behind 2-0 in the second inning on Friday afternoon, the Davenport baseball team gathered itself and proceeded to outscore Ashland 10-3 in the final six innings to win the series opener over the Eagles, 10-5. The Panthers and Eagles will play games two and three of the series on Saturday with the first pitch in game one of the doubleheader set for 10 a.m.
Davenport's sophomore southpaw,
James Kohl, improved to 3-0 with six innings of two-run ball on five hits to go with four walks and five strikeouts. In relief,
Zach Haefer gave up three earned runs in one inning pitched before
Max Swan handled the final two frames with only one hit allowed, no free passes and three punchouts.
At the dish, Davenport reeled off its 10 runs on 13 hits as three players recorded multiple hits including
Kamrin Markwardt (3-5, 3 RBI, 1 R, 3 2B),
Noah Marcoux (2-5, 1 HR, 2 R, 1 RBI) and
Carson Eby (2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI). All in all, nine Panthers recorded a hit and the two through six spots in the lineup went a combined 9-for-22 (.409 average) at the dish with eight runs scored, 7 RBI and two walks.
In the all-time series with Ashland, Davenport snapped a four-game skid, evened up the head-to-head record at 6-6 and made it 5-0 at home all time against the Eagles. Friday's effort marked just the third time in the 12 meetings that the Panthers scored 10 or more runs in a game.
