GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team will tangle with Ashland on Sunday at noon in a battle of unlikely finalists based on their seeding. The Panthers entered the tournament as the six seed while the Eagles are the fifth seed. Davenport defeated second-seeded Parkside 3-2 and Ashland disposed of top-seeded Saginaw Valley State 1-0 both on Friday. DU needed a pair of goals in the second half to overcome a 2-1 deficit.
Evan Marquess converted a penalty kick in the 74th minute and then less than four minutes later it was
Justice Sikkema who put home the game winner. The Eagles had a most improbable win over the Cardinals considering Yusuke Yasumasu got a red card in the 57th minute and AU still got the winning goal in the 68th minute on a penalty kick goal by Kieran Paterson, his fifth goal of the season.
The Eagles and Panthers met back on April 18 with Ashland winning 4-0 in Caledonia. The Eagles scored once in the first half and then added three goals in a span of 13 minutes in the second half. Both teams had 10 total shots but the Eagles made theirs count. Ashland leads the all-time series 5-3 and this will be the second time they have met in the conference tournament. Davenport won a quarterfinal match at home on Nov. 11, 2019 by a score of 2-1.
Brock Schultz and
Daire O'Riordan scored for the Panthers in that contest.
