LANSING, Mich. - It was another terrific performance by a Davenport pitcher named James on Friday as
James Kohl followed up
James Rogers performance yesterday with a gem of his own in an 8-4 win over Northwood at Jackson Field, home of the Lansing Lugnuts.
Kohl has been dialed in over his last three starts and that continued in his biggest start of the season as he went 6.2 innings and allowed just four hits. He gave up three runs and walked four, but managed to tie his season-high with 10 strikeouts. He got eight fly outs and one ground out and tossed 119 pitches to improve to 7-2 on the mound this season.
The Panther bats were hot early and that carried them to victory number 28 on the season and 12 in a row. Logan Lee could not make it out of the second inning when the Panthers scored six times. Lee retired the Panthers in order in the first inning but gave up a single to
Travis Harvey to start the second.
Carson Eby then doubled down the left field line and Harvey moved to third.
Kamrin Markwardt then drew a walk to load the bases and
Ben Mets played hero with a double off the wall in left center that was a couple of feet away from being a grand slam. Mets went to third on a wild pitch and
Gaetano Vallone hit a RBI double to left center with one out.
Nolan Anspaugh drew a four-pitch walk after the Vallone double and
Christian Petre singled through the right side for a RBI as Mets scored for a 5-1 lead. Hunter McShane entered on the mound for the Timberwolves and
Noah Marcoux hit a deep sacrifice fly to center as Anspaugh scored the sixth run.
Northwood got two runs back in the top of the third as Cole Brooks had a RBI single and Rhett Evans doubled him home with a two-bagger to left center. The Panthers got those two runs right back in the home half of the third.
Nolan Bryant had a RBI double to right and the Timberwolves replaced McShane with Albert Nagy. Vallone singled to left center for another RBI for an 8-3 lead.
Kohl struck out five straight batters between the fourth and fifth innings and then struck out Evans looking with runners on second and third to end the fifth. Northwood added a run in the eighth inning off
Zach Haefer as Evans scored on a wild pitch with two outs.
Cal Djuraskovic pitched in a non-save situation in the ninth and gave up a leadoff double to Michael Karam. He buckled down though and retired the next three hitters to end the contest.
Vallone had his first three-hit game of the season going 3-for-4 with two RBI for the nine-spot in the lineup. Mets finished with a team-high three RBI and collected two hits in four at-bats. Eby had a pair of doubles on the day and tied the single-season record at DU now with 21 doubles this season.Â
