ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Davenport men's soccer team was faced with an early-season challenge on Sunday as they continued their weekend road trip at ninth-ranked Maryville. The Saints were coming off a season-opening win at home on Friday over No. 3 Lynn while Davenport started their 2021 campaign with a narrow 3-2 loss at Ill.-Springfield on Friday.
The Panthers were without two starters but still managed to strike early and gain some momentum. The Saints had some troubles with a long ball played into their defensive end by
Daire O'Riordan.
Evan Marquess and goalkeeper Liam Walraven slightly bumped into each other just inside the top of the 18-yard box and Marquess sneaked around the keeper and buried a shot from 15 yards out into the open net for a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. For Marquess, it was a goal in consecutive games to start the season.
The lead stayed that way until 29 seconds left in the first half when Maryville scored the tying goal. Bryce Dickerson went up the right sideline and around defenders just before the end line and crossed a ball into the middle where Mason Crew finished it for his first goal of the season.
The Saints would score the game-winning goal in the 76th minute as Mirza Hasecic followed up a shot saved by
Jacob Lee for the Panthers and drilled the rebound from around eight yards out into the net. It was his second goal of the season and improved to Maryville to 2-0 on the season while Davenport fell to 0-2.
Lee in his first start and game action as a Panther had a busy afternoon as the Saints fired 20 total shots including nine on goal. Lee made seven saves and kept his team in the contest. The Panthers scored on their lone shot on goal for the match and took three total shots.Â
