GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's ACHA Division I hockey team won for the sixth straight time on Saturday evening with a 5-3 victory over Grand Valley State at Patterson Ice Center. The Panthers completed the week sweep of the Lakers coupled with Thursday's road win. Davenport has improved to 15-7 overall and has not lost since Nov. 21 against Illinois.
Each team scored twice in the first period trading goals. GVSU scored first at 7:49 and
Sebastien Doucet answered at 11:59 from
Nathan Nickelson and
Austin Thompson. The Lakers made it 2-1 at 17:05 but just 1:29 later it was
Stephen Smoody with the goal for Davenport unassisted.
The Lakers went to the penalty box three times in the second period and a key to the game was that the Panthers stayed out of the box for the first two periods. Thompson capitalized on one of those Laker penalties with a power play goal at 11:44 of the second period from the goaltender
Nathan Gauthier.
With a 3-2 lead entering the third period, Davenport increased their lead to 4-2 at the 10:35 mark as Doucet scored his second of the game from
Jacob Boucha and
Kristers Klavins on the power play. The Lakers made it interesting with a goal at 16:48, but the Panthers added one final goal at 17:31 as
Zachary Currie pushed the lead back to two goals and that's where it ended at 5-3.
Davenport would finish 2-for-6 on the power play and recorded 29 shots on goal. Gauthier made 24 saves in net for DU.
