HAMMOND, Ind. - The Davenport men's soccer team has picked up three straight wins and improved to 4-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the GLIAC after Saturday's 2-1 win at Purdue Northwest. The Panthers were looking up at the Pride in the conference standings as Purdue Northwest falls to 4-4-2 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC with the loss. It was a big win for the club as they position themselves inside the conference heading into the final month of the regular season. The team has won played everyone once in the round-robin format of the league schedule.
The Panthers got the scoring started in the eighth minute by who else by redshirt senior and top gunner
Matt Whelan. Whelan headed home the goal for his sixth of the season and
Eoin Broughan had the assist. Broughan took a free kick from about 25 yards on the left wing and delivered a beautiful ball into the box. Whelan charged and put the ball just under the crossbar in the middle of the frame.
Purdue Northwest were kept from too many quality scoring chances as they had four total shots and three shots on goal for the match. They did find the equalizer in the 79th minute however on a goal that defied the odds. Ariel Navarro was credited with his first goal of the season with an assist from Amedeo Tufano. The mind-boggling part was that the ball just couldn't get cleared out of the box and seemed to bounce all over the place including off what appeared to be DU defenders and past
Shane Marinkovich.
The Panthers had a response just 90 seconds later when
Josh Cook drilled a free kick from 30 yards on the right wing and it went over a group of players to the foot of
Joseph Renner. He quickly passed it into the box from short left wing and
George Deveau beat his man to the ball and chipped it home to the lower right corner in front of the net. Deveau's first goal of the season came at an impeccable moment. The Panthers return home in their next game on Friday, Oct. 7 with a 1:30 PM kickoff against Upper Iowa. DU beat the Peacocks 3-2 back on Sept. 25.
