CALEDONIA, Mich. - After a 1-1 halftime stalemate, the Davenport men's soccer team scored three second-half goals en route to their fourth straight win. DU defeated Upper Iowa, 4-1, to complete the season sweep of the Peacocks and get back to the .500 mark for the season at 5-5-1 overall. The Panthers moved to 4-2-1 in the conference while Upper Iowa is now 1-10 overall and 0-7 in the GLIAC.
The Panthers got on the board first in the 7th minute as
Justice Sikkema scored his third goal of the season.
George Deveau passed a great ball on the ground and Sikkema ran up to it and carried briefly before scoring from the right wing. The Peacocks were given a gift by
Shane Marinkovich in the 29th minute as the defense passed back to the keeper and he couldn't clear the ball and it went to Gerardo Romo in close range. He chipped the ball over Marinkovich and just before the crossed the goal line, Millo Mamud raced in and blasted it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
Davenport did have 10 shots in the first half including four on goal compared to four shots and three on goal for UIU. Davenport got the winner in the 54th minute as Deveau did a nice give-and-go with Sikkema on the right wing. Sikkema led him into space and he caught up and blasted it top right corner at a sharp angle for his second goal of the season.
From there,
Matt Whelan finished up the scoring in the 65th and 81st minutes. Whelan's seventh of the season was from
Faheem Patel and his eighth of the season was from
Eoin Broughan. DU finished with 19 shots including nine on goal compared to eight shots and four on goal (one in the second half) for the Peacocks.
