CALEDONIA, Mich. - Leading 1-0 at halftime thanks to
Haley Diekevers' second goal of the season, the Davenport University women's soccer team was feeling good against Saginaw Valley State on Sunday afternoon. However, the Cardinals went on to score three second-half goals, including a penalty kick and DU own goal, to defeat the Panthers, 3-1, at The Farm. Next up for Davenport is a trip to Purdue Northwest on Friday with the opening kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m. eastern.
Diekevers reached 10 career goals and needs just one more to break into the program's top 10. On the other side, the visitors scored their goals in the 71st (PK), 75th (own goal) and 85th (off corner) minutes to sweep the season series with Davenport. The Cardinals out-shot the Panthers, 15-6, including 8-4 in shots on goal, while tallying six corner kicks to the home team's four.
Davenport's six shots came from three different players including Diekevers (2 shots, 1 shot on goal),
Natalia Casiello (2 shots, 1 shot on goal) and
Citlali Luna (2 shots on goal). In goal,
Gabriana Bennecke made four saves on 16 shots faced.
