Panthers end regular season and honor seniors with a 2-0 win over Purdue Northwest

Matt Whelan scored both goals for DU and now has 13 this season

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The end of the regular season was marked by honoring six seniors during the pregame and then the team finished the deal with a 2-0 win over Purdue Northwest on Wednesday afternoon. For the Panthers it was their first clean sheet in the last seven matches dating back to Sept. 23 at St. Cloud State and the third overall shutout of the season. This year's senior class consists of Cian Quinn, Matt Whelan, Tyler Welch, Joseph Renner, Justice Sikkema, and Kenzie Hughes. Davenport improved to 6-7-3 overall and wrapped up third place in the GLIAC with a 5-4-3 record. DU needed this win over the Pride to vault them into third place. The Panthers will now gear up toward the GLIAC Tournament which starts on Sunday in the quarterfinals. DU will host St. Cloud State at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex on Oct. 30 at a time to be determined. The Panthers have a win and tie against the Huskies already this season.

Whelan provided all of the goal scoring in this one starting it off in the 19th minute for his 12th tally of the season. He scored from about 13 yards on the left wing into the lower right corner. The insurance marker came in the 70th minute when Whelan was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. He placed it lower left for his 13th goal of the season and 40th goal of his brilliant career. The Pride seemed to be given a break in the 75th minute when Welch was issued a red card for aggressive behavior and sent off leaving the Panthers a man down for the final 15-plus minutes. Davenport wasn't fazed by it however and allowed just one shot on goal in the 89th minute.

Shane Marinkovich was back in goal after a one-game absence and made six saves to record the shutout. Purdue Northwest held a 10-7 edge in total shots and 6-3 in shots on goal.
