CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team allowed St. Cloud State back into the match on Sunday in the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals, but prevailed 3-2 to advance to the semifinals with a date against Parkside on Friday, Nov. 4 at SVSU. The Panthers looked to be in control with a 2-0 lead after 71 minutes. St. Cloud State then scored the next two goals in a 10-minute span to tie it up. The Panthers would get the winning goal less than a minute later for the 3-2 final.
George Deveau scored in the 49th minute after Davenport had some chances, but could not score in the first half. Deveau took a pass from Keegan Gray in the middle of the field and buried it for his third goal of the season and the first assist for Gray. Andrew Dykstra subbed in and found the back of the net in the 63rd minute for his second goal of the season. Joseph Renner got him the ball in space and the freshman delivered for the 2-0 lead.
The Huskies got within 2-1 in the 72nd minute as Zinedine Kroeten had a free kick into the box and Owen Worsdell connected on his fifth goal of the season to tie the team lead for the season. That seemed to energize the Huskies who found the tying goal in the 82nd minute. Vukota Mastilovic had the header from the far post off a ball into the box by Rhys Ward. Mastilovic's second goal of the season was answered in just 46 seconds by the Panthers. It was none other than
Matt Whelan in the big moment with his 14th goal of the season on a great pass from Flynn De Luca from left wing into the box. Whelan was wide open and buried it upper right corner.
Davenport improved to 7-7-3 overall and had 17 shots including 10 on goal.
Shane Marinkovich made three saves for the Panthers. Gage Steiner made seven saves including a few magnificent ones to keep it close.
