GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - GLIAC play is here for the Davenport University men's basketball team as the Panthers will travel to Lake Superior State on Thursday (7:30 p.m. tip) and Ferris State on Sunday (3 p.m. tip).
Eckerd 77, Davenport 70: Eckerd's lead against Davenport was just two, 41-39, just over three minutes into the second half before the Tritons embarked on an 18-4 run that gave them their biggest lead of the game at 16, 59-43. After that, the closest the Panthers could get was five, 75-70, before the final seven-point margin.
Jordan Sterling led all scorers with 21 points (two off his career high) on 8-of-12 shooting, including 5-for-7 from behind the arc. Also scoring in double-figures for Davenport were
Marcedus Leech Jr. with 14,
Jakub Dombek with 11 and
Chaz Birchfield with 10. Birchfield paced the Panthers in rebounds with nine while four different players recorded a pair of assists including Birchfield,
Luke Bara,
Jaylen Hodges, and
Brackton Miller. Defensively, Birchfield also finished with two blocks.
Davenport 64, Tampa 58: Davenport broke through for its first win of the season on Saturday defeating Tampa of the Sunshine State Conference, 64-58. For the second-straight game, Davenport was paced by
Jordan Sterling in the scoring department as the graduate guard poured in 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting, including 2-of-6 from deep, to go with four rebounds, two steals and an assist. Next up was
Jakub Dombek with 15 points, seven boards and three steals. Also scoring in double-figures for the Panthers were
Luke Bara with 13, 12 of which came in the second half, and
Marcedus Leech Jr. with 10. Bara was on top of the team's assist category with three while
James Felton added three steals.
Scouting Lake Superior State: Picked to finish third in the GLIAC with one first-place vote in the preseason, Lake Superior State has won just one of its first five games like Davenport. With that being said, the Lakers are in search of their first victory over a Division II opponent this season. Individually, four players are averaging at least 10 points per game including Caden Ebeling (13.6), Preseason First Team All-GLIAC honoree, Kemon Bassett (11.0), Tyson Edmondson (10.8), and Xander Okerlund (10.0). Bassett also leads LSSU in rebounding with 6.6 per contest and assists with 3.4 per outing. Davenport has dropped two in a row in Sault Ste. Marie and is 1-5 all-time on Lake Superior State's floor.
Scouting Ferris State: The last time Davenport faced Ferris State was in Big Rapids for the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals. The eighth-seeded Panthers knocked off the top-seeded Bulldogs, 91-90, before going on to win the first GLIAC Tournament Championship in program history. Winners of four games in a row this season, the Bulldogs also have four averaging double-figures including Preseason Second Team All-GLIAC honoree, Ben Davidson (12.3), Solomon Oraegbu (10.8), also on the Second Team, Ethan Erickson (10.7), and Dolapo Olayinka (10.7). Olayinka is bringing down a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game while Davidson is dishing out 3.0 assists per contest.
