GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team is set to begin a four-game home stretch with an old WHAC foe in Aquinas on Friday and a brand new opponent in McKendree the following Monday.
Davenport 91, Great Lakes Christian 78: Fueled by a 15-point halftime lead, 48-33, Davenport was able to pick up its second win of the season, 91-78, over Great Lakes Christian.
Marcedus Leech Jr. led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-7 from deep, to go with nine rebounds and three assists. Also scoring in double-figures for Davenport were
Jakub Dombek and
Jaylen Hodges, each with 18. Dombek secured the second double-double of his career and first of the season thanks to a career-high 13 boards while
Jordan Sterling and
Chaz Birchfield each dished out five assists. Defensively, Dombek racked up four of Davenport's 10 blocks and Sterling tallied three steals.
Grand Valley State 87, Davenport 73: Davenport trailed Grand Valley State by five points, 74-69, with just over three and half minutes to play. The Lakers then scored 13 of the game's final 17 points to defeat the Panthers by 14, 87-73.
Jordan Sterling played all but the final 18 seconds while leading all scorers with 21 points (7-of-13 FG, 4-of-6 3FG) to go with six rebounds, three steals, two assists, and not a single turnover. Sterling was joined in the double-figure department by
Marcedus Leech Jr. (18),
Jakub Dombek (11) and
Jeff Carrier (10).
Chaz Birchfield brought down a career-high 10 boards,
Luke Bara dished out five assists and Dombek blocked a pair of shot attempts.
Scouting Aquinas: Davenport will face a familiar foe from the WHAC days on Friday when Aquinas comes to town for the 37th all-time meeting between the two teams. So far this season, a trio of Saints are averaging at least 12 points per game including Gabe Overway (13.4), Donovan Brown-Boyd (12.6) and Menalito McGee (12.0). Overway and Brown-Boyd are both bringing down 5.6 rebounds per contest while McGee paces the team in assists with 2.7 per outing. Aquinas just snapped a five-game skid, all in WHAC play, with a 70-61 win over UM-Dearborn on Saturday. The Saints are coached by Ryan Bertoia in his 11th season on the staff and seventh as head coach.
Scouting McKendree: Davenport and McKendree will meet for the first time ever on Monday night inside the DU Student Center. Coached by George Suggs in his second season as the head coach (14-12 overall last season), the Bearcats are 4-4 so far this season. They've been led by three scorers putting up at least 13 points per game including Eric Powell II (15.6, tied for third in GLVC), Bryson Bultman (15.5, fifth in GLVC) and Milos Vicentic (13.4). At 7.4 rebounds per contest, Bultman is tied for sixth in the league, as well as first in the conference in assists with 6.0 per outing.
