GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After trailing former WHAC foe Aquinas by three, 29-26, at halftime on Friday night, the Davenport University men's basketball team outscored the Saints by 11, 38-27, in the second to win by eight, 64-56. Next up, the Panthers will host McKendree on Monday with the opening tip scheduled for 6 p.m.
Jakub Dombek and
Marcedus Leech Jr. (pictured) tied for the game high in points with 15 while
Jordan Sterling added 10. Dombek (10 rebounds) went 6-of-8 from the field and secured his third career double-double, second of the season, to go with an assist, block and steal.
Jaylen Hodges dished out a career-high six assists and
James Felton blocked two shot attempts while Hodges and
Jeff Carrier notched two steals apiece.
The first half was a fairly tight one that saw three ties and eight lead changes. Davenport led by as many as three (15-12) and Aquinas' biggest advantage was five (5-0, 20-15, 27-22, 29-24). The hosts shot just 37 percent (10-of-27) in the first 20 minutes before heating up to shoot 56.5 percent (13-of-23) in the second half.
Out of the intermission, after deadlocks at 32-32 and 34-34, the Panthers took their first lead of the period at 35-34 thanks to a Dombek free throw. Less than a minute later, the Saints converted a layup to go ahead for the final time, 36-35, before Dombek cashed a three-pointer to give to put his team ahead for good. The home team would go on to stretch the margin to as large as 15 (60-45, 62-47) before the final eight-point spread.
