GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team will wrap up its 2022-23 non-conference slate on Friday and Monday when it plays host to Cornerstone (3 p.m.) and East-West (7 p.m.), respectively. The Golden Eagles, a former WHAC foe for the Panthers, lead the all-time series 19-13 while DU and the Phantoms will be meeting for the first time ever.
Davenport 64, Aquinas 56: After trailing former WHAC foe Aquinas by three, 29-26, at halftime, Davenport outscored the Saints by 11, 38-27, in the second to win by eight, 64-56.
Jakub Dombek and
Marcedus Leech Jr. tied for the game high in points with 15 while
Jordan Sterling added 10. Dombek (10 rebounds) went 6-of-8 from the field and secured his third career double-double, second of the season, to go with an assist, block and steal.
Jaylen Hodges dished out a career-high six assists and
James Felton blocked two shot attempts while Hodges and
Jeff Carrier notched two steals apiece.
McKendree 99, Davenport 89: Despite scoring 89 points, their second-highest total this season, and turning the ball over just 11 times, tied for second fewest, Davenport fell to McKendree, 99-89, in the two teams' first-ever meeting.
Marcedus Leech Jr. tied the game high in points with 21 while
Luke Bara (19) and
Chaz Birchfield (17) each notched a career high and
Jakub Dombek (16) also reached double-figures. Birchfield paced the team in rebounds with six and Dombek dished out a career-high four assists. Defensively, three different Panthers notched a block while Bara and
Jaylen Hodges each tallied a pair of steals.
Scouting Cornerstone: Former WHAC foes, Davenport and Cornerstone, will meet for the first time since the Panthers became a member of Division II prior to the 2017-18 season. The Golden Eagles have had the same head coach, Kim Elders, for all 32 of the two teams' meetings as Elders is in his 30th season at the helm. In that time, the Grand Valley State alum has compiled an overall record of 742-274 (.720 winning percentage). This season, CU has been paced by a quartet of scorers averaging at least 10 points per game including Cory Ainsworth (19.0 PPG), Luke Rowlinson (15.5), Carter Nyp (14.4), and Eli Steffen (10.6). Ainsworth also leads the team in rebounding with 7.9 per contest while Steffen is dishing out 5.3 assists per outing to just 2.2 turnovers per game.
