Men's Basketball Weekly Preview: Davenport and Grand Valley State to Renew Rivalry

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Coming off their second win of the season, a 91-78 home victory over Great Lakes Christian on Wednesday, the Davenport University men's basketball team will get right back to GLIAC play with a 3 p.m. tip at Grand Valley State on Sunday. The Panthers and Lakers will be meeting for the 14th time in their history with GVSU holding a three-game lead, 8-5.

Lake Superior State 81, Davenport 61: Plagued by a 15-point deficit in the first half, Davenport was never quite able to gain any traction at Lake Superior State for the GLIAC opener. The Lakers went on to lead by as many as 29, 67-38, in the second half before the final 20-point margin, 81-61. Marcedus Leech Jr. paced the Panthers with 17 points (4-of-8 from deep), five rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Jakub Dombek was the other DU scorer in double-figures thanks to 13 points to go with five boards, two dimes and a swipe. Chaz Birchfield was on top of the rebound department with six, Jordan Sterling and Jeff Carrier each had a block, while Jaylen Hodges racked up four steals.

Ferris State 103, Davenport 54:  Davenport's scoring was led by Marcedus Leech Jr. and his 17 points while Jakub Dombek added 13. James Felton brought down seven rebounds, Leech Jr. dished out three assists, Dombek and Felton each notched a block, and Jaylen Hodges racked up three steals.

Davenport 91, Great Lakes Christian 78: Fueled by a 15-point halftime lead, 48-33, Davenport was able to pick up its second win of the season, 91-78, over Great Lakes Christian. Marcedus Leech Jr. led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-7 from deep, to go with nine rebounds and three assists. Also scoring in double-figures for Davenport were Jakub Dombek and Jaylen Hodges, each with 18. Dombek secured the second double-double of his career and first of the season thanks to a career-high 13 boards while Jordan Sterling and Chaz Birchfield each dished out five assists. Defensively, Dombek racked up four of Davenport's 10 blocks and Sterling tallied three steals.

Scouting Grand Valley State: Coming into this game at 0-2 in the league, both Davenport and Grand Valley State will be eager to mark one in the GLIAC win column on Sunday in Allendale. The Panthers are coming off their second win of the season while the Lakers are coming off their fourth, but have dropped two of their last three games and five of their previous seven. GVSU is under new leadership with head coach, Cornell Mann, who was named head coach of the Lakers on April 2 following after longtime leader, Ric Wesley. This season, a pair of players are averaging at least 10 points per game for Grand Valley State including Marius Grazulis (11.0) and Chinedu Kingsley Okanu (10.1). Those two are each bringing down five rebounds per contest while Trevor Smith is on top of the assist department at 2.3 per outing.
