SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The men's tennis team might be giving head coach
Patrick Grashorn an ulcer with so many close wins this season. That trend continued on Saturday as the Panthers remained unbeaten (5-0) with a 4-3 win at Lawrence Tech. It is the fourth 4-3 win in five matches this season for Davenport.
The Panthers were able to gain one point in doubles play winning at the one and two spots.
Juan-Louis van Antwerpen, the reigning GLIAC Player of the Week, and
Jonathan Bulmer won 6-2 at one doubles over Patrick Putschbach and Jannis Schneider.
Quintan van Wijk and
Joel Mast at two doubles needed a tiebreak but prevailed 7-6 (7-2) over Alexander Tammaro and Luca Roth.
In singles competition, Davenport got the three points needed for the victory. van Antwerpen needed three sets but triumphed over Evan Morgan at one singles by scores of 6-4, 3-6, 10-5. He now has 55 singles wins at DU ranking third all-time. van Wijk played with far less stress in a 6-2, 6-4 win at two singles over Tammaro. Bulmer at three singles clinched the fourth point with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Nils Hammarsten. For Bulmer, he reached win number 57 in his singles career and needs two more to tie the all-time record of 59 set by Tyler Chambers (2009-14).
