WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The No. 20 Davenport baseball team got swept in a doubleheader on Sunday at Central Missouri. The Mules were ranked No. 3 in the preseason but dropped out of the top 25 after starting the season 2-2. UCM picked up a 6-5 win in game one and an 8-3 win in game two. Davenport falls to 1-4 this season and the two teams will play again tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM eastern time (11:00 AM local time).
Davenport never had a lead in game one and with the game tied at 3 after six innings, gave up three runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings.
Noah Marcoux had a multi-home run game with a solo shot to center field in the third inning and then a two-run jack to right field with two outs in the ninth inning to make things a bit nervous for the Mules.
Logan Hylek singled to start the top of the ninth and scored on Marcoux's homer.
Cam Hart followed with a double down the left field line to put the tying run in scoring position. Brady Gavin, the fourth pitcher of the game for UCM, relieved Ethan Peterson after the Hart double. He got a ground ball out to end the game and get his first save of the season. Tyler Kotsis (2-0) got the win for the Mules throwing one relief inning and striking out two.
Collin Jones and
Dalton O'Boyle both gave their teams solid starting pitching. O'Boyle for the Panthers got the no-decision with 5.1 innings on the mound. He allowed just three hits and walked one with four strikeouts.
Spencer Vainavicz (0-1) took the loss in relief of O'Boyle. He allowed two runs in 1.2 innings and walked one with three strikeouts. Marcoux's three RBI led the team and
Christian Petre went 3-for-4 with an inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning.
Game two was a close affair until the seventh inning when the Mules scored five runs to take an 8-3 lead that would stay that way until the end. John Prudhom had a grand slam in the seventh and also had a triple and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. Davenport took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth as
Ben Mets had a RBI double down the left field line scoring Hart and Petre drove in another run on a grounder to second to score Mets.
Harrison Schnurbusch for Central Missouri had a RBI triple in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. Donovan Ditto also drove in Schnurbusch on a groundout to shortstop for a 3-2 lead.
Brennan Lux led off the fifth inning for Davenport with his first home run as a Panther to tie it at 3-3.
Carson Fischer gave up the one-out grand slam in the seventh and took the loss (1-1). He threw three innings and gave up five runs with a walk and four strikeouts.
Derrick Edington got the start for DU and went four innings and allowed four hits and three runs with a walk and four strikeouts. Harrison Babbitt (1-0) got the win in relief for the Mules. He tossed one inning and struck out one of the three batters he faced in the top of the seventh.
Nolan Anspaugh had a triple in four at-bats.
