GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's ACHA Division I hockey team was looking to capture their first GLCHL tournament title since 2013 on Saturday. The second-seeded Panthers were upset however by fourth-seeded Grand Valley State 6-5 in double overtime at Eagles Ice Center. Davenport had won five of six meetings during the regular season against the Lakers but GVSU is playing great hockey right now and beat top-seeded Adrian the night before to get to this position.

Jack Sanko scored the only first period goal with an assist from Jacob Demeter at 8:59. Davenport would score four more times in the second period and looked to be in control ahead 5-2 after 40 minutes. Sanko scored again at 1:43 of the second from Demeter and Kristers Klavins. Robert McLaughlin scored at 6:14 on the power play from Klavins and Adam Hulsey. Austin Thompson made it 4-0 at 8:28 from Sebastien Doucet and Nathan Nickelson. GVSU scored the next two goals to pull within 4-2. Thompson scored his second of the period at 19:37 from Stephen Smoody.

The Lakers then mounted the major comeback scoring at 3:58, 4:45, and 11:07 of the third period to tie the game. Zach Borchardt scored on the power play to make it 5-4 and then Zack Kippe tied it from Josh Fraysland and Shane Haggerty.

Neither team could score in the first overtime period which lasted 20 minutes in a sudden-death situation. The Lakers got the tournament clincher at 1:14 of the second overtime as Borchardt got the goal and Sam Lechel had the assist. Nathan Gauthier made 47 saves for the Panthers. DU had 35 shots on goal in the contest. The team will now await their selection to the ACHA National Tournament.
