GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Sunday morning battle between Davenport and Tiffin in men's tennis went down to the wire with DU improving to 4-0 with a 4-3 win at the Grand Rapids Racquet Club. The Dragons lost for the first time this season (2-1) as the Panthers took the doubles point by winning two of three. DU would then win half of the singles matches to get three more points including the clinching fourth point.
Juan-Louis van Antwerpen and
Jonathan Bulmer won 6-4 at one doubles.
Joel Mast and
Quintan van Wijk captured a 6-3 win at two doubles.
Juan Jose Pino Contoleon and
Daniil Khitrou dropped their match at three doubles 6-4.
Bulmer finished first in singles with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 win over Matthew Telford. van Antwerpen was next to earn a win at one singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Michael Gurtner. Ruben Fonga of Tiffin made it 3-1 as he beat van Wijk 7-5, 7-5. Matthew Weaver for the Dragons made it 3-2 at four singles with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Mast. Frank Piana at five singles clinched it with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Mattia Colli. Khitrou had the only three-set match at six singles falling 6-1, 3-6, 8-10 to Cyrille Colomb. The all-time series with Tiffin now stands at a 3-3 tie.
