DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Davenport baseball team ran into an Embry-Riddle squad desperate for a win and the Eagles needed only seven innings to get one on Wednesday. ERAU handed the Panthers a 17-4 loss at Sliwa Stadium and improved to 3-11 overall. Davenport started their spring trip with four straight wins but have lost two in a row and stand at 6-7 overall. Next up is no picnic as they travel to No. 4 Nova Southeastern to begin a three-game, three-day series against the undefeated Sharks (13-0).
Tyler Hill lasted just four batters in the start for Davenport. He walked the first three guys and then hit a batter to force in a run. The Ball State transfer failed to get out of the first inning for the second start in three tries. He was relieved by
Carson Fischer who was greeted by Zach Coldsnow and a two-RBI single for a 3-0 lead. A fielder's choice plated the fourth run which were all charged to Hill. DU trailed 5-0 before they could even blink and the Eagles applied more pressure with two runs in the second and then five more in the third for a 12-0 lead.
Davenport scored once in the fourth inning as
Cam Hart had a RBI single which scored
Nolan Anspaugh. The bench began to empty in the fifth inning and the Panther reserves found a way to score three runs in the fifth inning. Those runs made it 15-4 as the Eagles scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to take a 15-1 lead.
Logan Hylek had a sacrifice fly to center which scored
Cobe Huizenga.
Aaron Cardoza had a RBI single through the right side which scored
Logan Todd.
Blake Jacklin got his first career RBI on a sacrifice fly to left center which plated
Carter Troncin.
The Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and DU could not score in the top of the seventh as the mercy rule was enforced. Coldsnow drove in five runs for Embry-Riddle to lead the team. He went 3-for-3 with a triple and a walk. Andrew Martinez went 3-for-4 with two RBI and also hit a home run. Robert Post finished 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. ERAU finished with 19 hits including eight extra-base hits. DU used seven pitchers in the game and
Evan Maize was the only one not to give up a run in his one inning of work. John Barone (1-0) got the win for the Eagles going four innings and allowing three hits with a walk and strikeout.
