DU hammers the ball in sweep at Quincy

The Panthers scored 30 runs on Sunday and won the last three games of the series

QUINCY, Ill. - The offense that had been below average much of the season for the Davenport baseball team looked to come in life on Sunday with 30 runs in a doubleheader sweep at Quincy. The fact that they did this against a quality regional opponent bodes well as the team enters Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next week against another talented program in Northwood. DU was picked to repeat as GLIAC champion while the Timberwolves were selected second by the league's head coaches.

DU captured a 11-7 win in game one and then prevailed 19-8 in the nightcap in seven innings due to mercy rule. The Panthers were able to win the final three games of the series against the Hawks and are now 10-13 overall this season.

Davenport had 14 hits in game one but found themselves down 7-6 heading into the final at-bat. DU jumped out 3-0 in the top of the first and then Quincy scored twice in the bottom of the first. The see-saw affair saw the lead change a couple of times and three runs in the sixth for the Hawks gave them a one-run lead. Davenport responded and then some in the seventh with five runs to take the lead for good. The Panthers scored all five runs with two outs. Noah Marcoux walked to tie the game at 7 and Carter Troncin walked in the next at-bat to take an 8-7 lead. Troncin battled and had a 2-2 count then fouled off a pitch and took two balls to force in a run. Ben Mets followed with a two-run scoring single up the middle for a 10-7 lead. A few batters later, Logan Hylek walked with the bases loaded as a pinch hitter in a seven-pitch at-bat.

James Kohl had a no-decision in the start going 5.1 innings and allowing six hits and five runs with three strikeouts. Troncin pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn the win (2-0) and also went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Gaetano Vallone, Cam Hart, and Christian Petre each had a double. Vallone went 3-for-5 with two runs and a RBI. Nolan Anspaugh went 2-for-3 with three runs and a stolen base.

The Panthers pounded 19 hits in game two and scored a season-high 19 runs. DU scored in five of the seven innings in the game including six runs in the second, five in the fifth, and four in the sixth. Carson Price had his first home run as a Panther in the second to give DU a 3-2 lead. Marcoux launched his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the second for a 5-2 lead. Carson Eby made it three home runs in the second with a three-run blast to left for an 8-2 advantage.

Mets had a RBI single in the third and fifth innings with the second one making it 12-5. Petre had a two-run double in the fifth for a 14-5 lead. Vallone also had a RBI double in the sixth followed by a RBI double by Marcoux, who drove in nine runs this weekend. Troncin had a sacrifice fly in the sixth for a 18-5 lead. Mets homered to left center also in the sixth for the 19th run of the game for Davenport.

Anspaugh tied his own school record with five runs scored and batted over .600 in the series to raise his season average to .307. Anspaugh had a pair of doubles, stole two bases, and walked three times. Marcoux drove in three runs in game two. Mets finished 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. Price finished 3-for-4 in his second career start with two RBI.

Jared Schwartz lasted 2.1 innings in the start and allowed five hits and five runs. Alex Lord calmed things down on the mound going the next 2.2 innings to get the win (1-0). He allowed two hits and no runs with a walk and two strikeouts.
