GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For just the second time in nine all-time meetings, the Davenport men's tennis team got the better of Northwood and this time it was a convincing 7-0 win to begin GLIAC play. Davenport ranked No. 23 in NCAA Division II improved to 14-2 overall while Northwood is now 5-10.
The doubles were close matches but won by the Panthers who took a team point.
Jonathan Bulmer and
Juan-Louis van Antwerpen at one doubles figured out Mathis Violet and Leon Grundstrom with a 7-5 win.
Quintan van Wijk and
Joel Mast needed a tiebreaker but pulled it out 7-6.
Daniil Khitrou and
Maxim Drinchich at three doubles won 6-4 against Amaan Tezabwala and Maharsh Patel.
The momentum carried over into singles for the Panthers winning all six matchups. Four of those were decided in straight sets including Drinchich at six singles with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Patel. Khitrou at five singles won 6-4, 6-3 over Tony Henrio. Bulmer cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win at three singles over David Sedlar.
The two matches that went three sets included van Antwerpen at one singles and Mast at four singles. van Antwerpen dropped the first set 7-6 and then rallied for a 7-6, 6-2 finish over Grundstrom. Mast won 7-6 in the first set, dropped the second 6-1, and claimed the third set 6-2.
