HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Davenport men's tennis team found out Friday that they were ranked seventh in the first Midwest Regional rankings released by the NCAA. The news was downplayed however as Michigan Tech pulled off a 4-3 upset to earn their first win of the season.
The doubles point went to the Panthers winning two of the three matches.
Jonathan Bulmer and
Juan-Louis van Antwerpen at one doubles got a 6-4 win over Vitor Jordao and Adam Fenjiro.
Quintan van Wijk and
Joel Mast at two doubles got a 6-2 win over Eli Pinnoo and Siddhesh Mahadeshwar.
van Wijk played at one singles for the first time this season and cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Fenjiro. van Antwerpen had a back-and-forth match at two singles and after winning the first set 7-6 (7-2) fell 7-5, 6-3 in the last two sets.
Bulmer had a quick win over Nikolai Prosjankyov at three singles by scores of 6-3, 6-0. Mast and
Daniil Khitrou each had a one-set lead in their matches but fell in the next two. Mast won 6-4 and then lost 6-3, 6-2 against Pinnoo. Khitrou at five singles won 6-4 before falling 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) against Andrew Freel.
Maxim Drinchich at six singles dropped the first set 6-3 and then won 6-3 in the second set. Mahadeshwar took the match with a 6-4 win in the final set.
