Panthers get a day-night doubleheader sweep against Indianapolis

DU won the weekend series with today's wins and are now 23-19 overall

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team took both games of a rare day-night doubleheader on Saturday at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex against Indianapolis. The Panthers won 12-10 in the day game and cruised 18-6 in the night game. It was the first game under the lights at home this season. The last non-conference games of the season moved the team's record to 23-19 overall. The Panthers have two more weekend GLIAC series at Grand Valley and home against Purdue Northwest.

Davenport led for most of game one but things got interesting in the eighth inning. The Panthers led 7-5 but saw the Greyhounds scored three times to take their first lead at 8-7. The bottom of the eighth saw the Panthers respond and score five times to take a 12-8 lead. Christian Petre hit a one-out solo home run to tie the game at 8. Nolan Anspaugh then tripled down the right field line and scored on a shallow fly ball to right caught by the second baseman. Anspaugh's speed beat the throw home and gave DU a 9-8 lead. Noah Marcoux walked with two outs on four pitches and Ben Mets was hit by a pitch to set up Carson Eby. He delivered the big blow with a three-run home run to left center for a 12-8 lead.

UIndy fought back with two runs in the top of the ninth and stranded runners on first and third. Ricky Clark was in the game on the mound and was replaced by Spencer Vainavicz who got the final two batters for his second save of the season. Clark got the win (3-1) as the fourth pitcher of the game for Davenport. He struck out four in 1.1 innings. Jared Schwartz got the start and went 4.1 innings. He allowed six hits and three earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts. UIndy used seven pitchers and Austin Bestul (0-3) took the loss giving up those five runs in the eighth inning.

Marcoux had a RBI single in the first inning followed by a Carter Troncin solo homer in the second inning for a 2-0 lead. The Greyhounds tied it up at 2 in the third inning but DU responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third as Caleb Anspaugh had a two-run single up the middle.

Caleb Anspaugh drove in another run in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice and Troncin had a two-run single to left for a 7-3 lead. Drew Donaldson drove in the go-ahead runs in the eighth for UIndy and finished 4-for-5 with four RBI in game one. Eby, Troncin, and Petre each homered for DU. Eby, Caleb Anspaugh, and Troncin all drove in three runs. DU also stole a season-high six bases including a pair by Caleb Anspaugh.

The Panthers wasted no time in game two with eight runs in the first inning and cruised to the 18-6 win. Eby had a three-run scoring double which gave DU a 4-0 lead. Carson Price had a sacrifice fly to score Eby for the 5-0 lead. Nolan Anspaugh then homered to left which was a three-run blast for the 8-0 lead. He had a triple and home run in the first inning.

The Panthers scored three more runs in the fourth inning for an 11-1 lead. Caleb Anspaugh had a two-run scoring double to left center to drive in the 10th and 11th runs. DU tacked on two runs in the sixth inning for a 13-1 lead. Caleb Anspaugh homered to deep center and Price had a fielder's choice to score another run. Troncin had a strong outing on the mound allowing just one run through the first six innings. He ran into some trouble in the seventh inning when the Greyhounds scored five times to make it 13-6. Troncin was replaced by Zach Haefer after the first four batters reached base.

Haefer gave up a single and Vainavicz took over but gave up a RBI single. He would get out of the inning and struck out two in the inning. The Panthers scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh as Marcoux had a RBI triple followed by a Ben Mets two-run homer for a 16-6 lead. Troncin went to designated hitter after leaving the mound and had a RBI single to make it 17-6.

Nolan Anspaugh went 3-for-5 with four runs, three RBI and three stolen bases. Mets, Caleb Anspaugh, and Eby each drove in three runs. DU drew eight walks in game two.
