MIDLAND, Mich. - The men's tennis team fell 4-1 in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals on Saturday against top-seed and 10th-ranked Wayne State at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. The Warriors won their ninth straight match to improve to 20-4 overall. Davenport bows out with a record of 18-7 and will now wait to see if they make the NCAA field for the first time. The selection will take place on Tuesday, May 3 at 8 PM on NCAA.com.
The Warriors took two doubles matches and the third was unfinished as Wayne State earned the point. Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey defeated
Jonathan Bulmer and
Juan-Louis van Antwerpen 6-3 at one doubles. Niklas Karcz and Ben Lakeman at three doubles defeated
Daniil Khitrou and
Maxim Drinchich 6-3. Luke Laws and Dom Spicer at two doubles had a 5-4 lead over
Quintan van Wijk and
Joel Mast when the match stopped.
The team's point came from van Wijk at one singles. He won 6-1, 6-3 against Spicer for his 19th singles win of the season and third at the one position. The 19 singles wins puts him in a tie for second in a season at Davenport. van Antwerpen fell 6-3, 6-2 against Lakeman at two singles. Bulmer fell 6-2, 6-3 at three singles against Karcz. Grey clinched it with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mast at four singles. Khitrou at five singles was tied a set apiece and Drinchich at six singles was up one set when the match was stopped.
