ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team resumed their weekend series at Grand Valley State on Sunday with a doubleheader at the GVSU Baseball Field. The Lakers took game one 6-3 in seven innings and the Panthers rallied for a 14-11 win in game two. Davenport is still clinging to first place in the GLIAC standings by mere percentage points over Wayne State. DU is now 13-6 while the Warriors are 15-7 and have played three more GLIAC games to date. Wayne State wrapped up their four-game series against Purdue Northwest today and the Pride salvaged the final game of the series 11-10. Northwood was able to take all four games this weekend against Parkside and are now 13-7.
Davenport took a 2-0 lead in game one in the second inning courtesy of a
Christian Petre two-run home run to right. It was Petre's fifth home run of the season. Brendan Guciardo tied it up at 2 in the bottom half of the second with a two-run home run to center. The Lakers scored another run in the inning as Justin Ratliff in the nine-hole of the lineup had a RBI double.
DU tied it up at 3 in the top of the third inning as
Carson Eby had a sacrifice fly to score
Noah Marcoux. Even though they tied the game it was a big momentum swing as DU loaded the bases with no outs but only managed the one run. Grand Valley State capitalized in the bottom of the third with three runs.
Jared Schwartz hit two batters and another reached on a fielder's choice and an error.
Spencer Vainavicz inherited the bases loaded and one out. He plunked Guciardo on the foot to plate the game-winning run and a 4-3 lead. Next, he unleashed a wild pitch which scored another run and then Carter Smith's RBI single made it 6-3.
The Panther offense went cold after the third inning. They were retired in order in the fourth and fifth innings and managed a single to start the sixth before three straight strikeouts. Nick Shaw came on from Austin Brown to start the sixth and allowed just the leadoff single in the sixth. He got a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh for his 11th save of the season. Brown (4-2) went five innings and did not walk a batter with five strikeouts. Schwartz (2-5) took the loss going 2.1 innings and allowing three earned runs with a walk and two strikeouts.
Ricky Clark had a very solid relief appearance for the Panthers going the final three innings and allowing no hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
In game two, both teams scored three times in the first inning.
Gaetano Vallone had a double with one out and
Noah Marcoux launched his 10th home run of the season to right for the 2-0 lead.
Ben Mets made it back-to-back home runs to right center for the 3-0 lead. Nathan Logan for the Lakers had a two-run homer to center as part of the GVSU three-run first inning.
The Lakers took a 6-3 lead in the third inning as Logan had an infield RBI single and DU starter
Carter Troncin was replaced by
Zach Haefer. GVSU tacked on a sacrifice fly and sacrifice bunt for the three-run lead. The Panthers then took the lead for good in the fourth inning with seven runs on five hits and one GVSU error. Davenport scored all seven runs with two outs.
Tyler Mosher had a RBI single after Eby walked and Troncin singled to left. The error extended the inning and six runs were scored after it. Petre reached on that error and Troncin scored with Mosher moving to third.
Nolan Anspaugh delivered a two-RBI single for the 7-6 lead. Vallone then hit a two-run blast to right center for the 9-6 lead. GVSU starter Nick Rutkowski was replaced by Colby Phipps but Marcoux greeted him with his second home run of the game to right center for the 10-6 advantage.
The Lakers got a run in the fourth and fifth to make it 10-8. The Panthers got those two runs back in the seventh as Troncin had a RBI single and an error allowed the second run to score unearned for the 12-8 lead. The Lakers scored one run in the seventh to make it 12-9. Petre walked and stole second in the eighth inning and Anspaugh singled him in up the middle for the 13-9 lead.
Again it was one run for Grand Valley State in the eighth inning to cut it to 13-10. DU responded once again with a run in the top of the ninth. Troncin doubled to right center and scored
Caleb Anspaugh who reached on an error.
Isaac Van Dyke finished up his fifth inning in relief and
Alex Lord came on for the ninth. Christian Faust doubled and Logan singled to left to make it 14-11. Lord then struck out the next two batters and got a fielder's choice grounder to end the game.
Haefer just tossed the third inning but got the win after DU scored seven runs in the fourth and never trailed again. He is 1-1 this season on the mound. Van Dyke had a workman-like effort going five innings and allowing five hits and three earned runs with a walk and five strikeouts. DU finished with 14 hits and three apiece came from Marcoux and Troncin. Marcoux finished 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Nolan Anspaugh also drove in three runs. Troncin finished 3-for-5 with two RBI.
The two teams are scheduled to complete their four-game series on Monday, May 2 at 3:05 PM in a single, nine-inning game.
